Baja California, the northern part of the Baja California peninsula, and the northernmost state of Mexico, borders in the west to the Sea of Cortez and to the east to the Pacific Ocean. In the south it is bordered by Baja California Sur and to the north by the United States. Close to the frontier Baja California as well borders to the state of Chihuahua. The state got its status only in 1953, before ( like Baja California Sur ) it was called North Territory of Baja California. Besides export oriented manufacturing, in and around the capital Mexicali and Baja Californias largest city Tijuana, the economy focuses on tourism and some agriculture. The state is subdivided into only 5 municipalities.
