Sharing its name with its capital city, the Mexican state of Guanajuato is located in the center of the Mexican Republic. Divided into 46 municipalities Guanajuato was one of the first colonized states. The rich gold, silver and opal mines made it one of the most important areas and due to this fact today Guanajuato is well known for its well preserved colonial architecture and its unique culture. Today mining in the state of Guanajuato together with industrial production of domestic goods are the most important parts of the states economy. The center of the capital Guanajuato often was compared to older Spanish cities in Europe because of its architecture.
Its neighbours are the states of Jalisco, Michoacán, Querétaro and San Luis PotosÃ.
