Compostela in the municipality of Compostela, is besides Tepic the largest city close to the Riviera Nayarit. With about 16.000 inhabitants, Compostela is a regional social and cultural center. Today its economy is based on agriculture, before some silver and gold mines made it interesting for the spanish colonists. Due to its history Compostela features some classic Mexican architecture which is visited each year by many tourists which are traveling to the nearby beach villages Chacala, La Peñita de Jaltemba, Rincon de Guayabitos, Sayulita and San Pancho. Compostela is of certain importance due to the fact that the highway Mex 200 leads from Tepic through Compostela and Las Varas to the Riviera Nayarit and the Banderas Bay in the south. Actually a new road is planned to make the Riviera Nayarit better accessible by road for travelers coming from Tepic airport or the central part of the Mexican Republic.
