Yucatán is the northernmost state of the Mexican Yucatán peninsula. Today Yucatán borders to Campeche to the west and to Quintana Roo to the north. About 40 years ago Quintana Roo still was a part of the Yucatán state. Yucatán features a very interesting pre-Columbian influenced culture as well as many ruins and buildings of ancient civilizations. The state is subdivided into 108 municipalities and its capital is the city of Merida. Besides agriculture the most important economic factor is tourism, which is still growing as Yucatán provides some of the best beaches in Mexico.
