Veracruz, the Mexican state with the oldest spanish settelments, is located southeast of the mainland of Mexico, bordering to the east the Gulf of Mexico. Surrounded from north to west and south by the states Tamaulipas, San Luis PotosÃ, Hidalgo, Puebla, Chiapas and Campeche, Veracruz is the state with the third highest population in the Republic of Mexico. The tropical climate and the humid conditions make the state an important provider of agricultural products. Veracruz, divided into 212 municiplities with its capital Xalapa, features unique natural impressions on sea level as well as on altitudes of 5000 and more meters. Many archaelogical sites of different pre -Columbian cultures can be found in Veracruz, museums with excellent collections provide a good overview and introduction into the states history.
